Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria sign Declaration supporting market integration in the broader region
21 May 2015, Riga
The government officials of Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria confirmed their support for the implementation of interconnection and substantial bi-directional capacity of existing infrastructure for natural gas supply on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and the Slovak Republic and for joint efforts to seek new sources and routes of diversification with the signing of Declaration at Riga Summit, 21st May 2015.

By signing the Declaration, countries declared their full political support for enhancing the security of supply and market integration in the region. The importance of the Declaration, signed by Ministers of Foreign Affairs of four participating countries underlined Tomáš Mareček, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Eustream as a very important step for energy security in Europe: “Big international projects cannot progress without political support. It is in the public interest that governments cooperate with companies to ensure energy security and market integration in the broader region. In Riga we have seen such cooperation.”

On the occasion of this signing, Mirek Topolánek, Head of International Development and Public Affairs of Eustream said: “We propose a project which offers direct and cost-effective bi-directional transmission route between Turkey and the rest of the Europe which fully complies with the spirit of the Declaration and represents an important step towards the Single European Market in the vision of the Energy Union. This project will be able to transport natural gas from different areas and alternative sources – it will bring gas from Turkish border to Europe and also from liquid European gas hubs to Turkey. In the same time it will provide South-eastern Europe with gas from the European gas hubs. By offering the opportunity for diversification of transmission routes as well as supply sources the project enhances the security of supply, especially in the countries of the South-eastern Europe. All these highlight the strategic nature of the Eastring project.”

Diversification of transmission routes and supply sources is also a priority of European Commission and one of the major steps towards achieving the full targets of the Energy Union.

Signing of Declaration follows the inclusion of Eastring to TYNDP (Ten Year Network Development Plan) almost two weeks ago, 13th May 2015. The official inclusion of Eastring to the list of European projects by ENTSOG (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas) is another important step towards successful implementation of the project.
